A Fresh Face Is Coming To Replace Mazda’s Aging Small SUV

  • New Mazda CX-20 will replace aging CX-3 with sleeker styling and improved interior space.
  • The SUV will ride on electrified platform with mild-hybrid inline-four engine options available.
  • Upscale interior expected with more tech and space than the outgoing subcompact model.

After more than a decade of holding down the entry-level spot in Mazda’s lineup, the pint-sized CX-3 is finally on its way out. Trademark filings and hints from company executives suggest that its successor, likely to be called the CX-20, is already deep in development. Positioned just below the CX-30, the CX-20 appears set to continue Mazda’s focus on design-driven, driver-focused crossovers.

At a recent event tied to Mazda’s operations in Thailand, executives offered a few hints about what’s next, supported by early design sketches. While it may be a while before we see the final product, here’s what we know so far about the CX-20.

The CX-20 looks set to embrace the latest evolution of Mazda’s Kodo design language, similar to what we’ve seen on the larger CX-60 and CX-90. Sketches revealed at the Thailand event show a compact SUV with clean, flowing lines and a sporty, low-slung stance. The front end hints at a wider, more aggressive grille flanked by slim LED headlights and vertically stacked daytime running lights, features that seem inspired by the next-generation CX-5.

The overall stance appears sporty and low-slung. In profile, the CX-20 almost seems to adopt a coupe-like roofline that slopes toward the rear, giving it a youthful vibe. Mazda’s concept drawings even suggest a contrasting black roof and unique circular tail light elements. Of course, sketch details are often exaggerated, but it’s safe to say the CX-20 will be a visual standout.

A Nicer Interior

While no images of the CX-20’s interior have surfaced, the cabin will likely be more premium and tech-forward than the outgoing CX-3. Hiroshima has a reputation for upscale interiors that punch well above their weight, so the CX-20 should feature quality materials and a sleek, minimalist design.

Interior space is also expected to improve over the CX-3, which often drew criticism for its tight rear seats and limited cargo room. On the tech front, expect a digital instrument cluster and Mazda’s latest infotainment system. However, whether or not it keeps the rotary dial remains unclear, with the automaker’s latest Chinese offerings ditching it altogether for an all-touchscreen affair.

Mazda has invested $150 million into its Thai production plant, aiming to build a new generation of electrified compact SUVs. That’s a strong indicator that the CX-20 will ride on a platform designed with hybrid powertrains in mind. According to the brand’s electrification roadmap, the model is expected to feature a mild-hybrid setup paired with an inline-four engine, likely in 1.5- or 2.0-liter form.

Like the CX-3, the CX-20 will be based on a front-wheel-drive layout, with all-wheel drive possibly available as an option. A plug-in hybrid version hasn’t been confirmed yet, but it remains a possibility further down the line.

Rivals and Reveal

The Ford Puma is not available in North America.

This segment is one of the most competitive in the industry. The CX-20 will have to contend with strong entries from Hyundai, Honda, Kia, Toyota, and Ford, including models like the Kona, HR-V, Stonic, Yaris Cross, and Puma.

Mazda hasn’t confirmed when the CX-3’s successor will debut, but current signs suggest we’ll see the wraps come off within the next 18 months. The new crossover will primarily target Asia-Pacific markets, though that doesn’t rule out other regions down the road.

Should Mazda bring the CX-20 to the US? That’s still an open question. But we’re curious what you think. Let us know in the comments.
