- California police just issued hundreds of speeding tickets over the Memorial Day weekend.
- Even after the weekend, CHP continued targeting speeders on the same scenic route.
- Two Porsche 911s were caught speeding through a construction zone days after the blitz.
California might be a postcard come to life, but that doesn’t mean it’s an open invitation to drive like you’re in a car commercial. The state’s mountain passes, coastal highways, and everything in between make it a dream for drivers, but lately, some have been pushing the limits a little too enthusiastically.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) just wrapped up a holiday enforcement period, and the numbers suggest that the speeding hasn’t exactly slowed down since.

The department says that over Memorial Day weekend, they issued 410 citations in the Santa Cruz area alone. That’s an average of 136.6 tickets every day or 5.69 tickets every hour for 72 hours straight. On top of that, they issued a further 119 verbal warnings, made 25 arrests, and attended to one fatal crash.
Notably, 247 of the 410 citations given were for speeding. Five of those were to a group of Corvette drivers allegedly speeding down Highway 1. “This afternoon, during the HOLIDAY ENFORCEMENT PERIOD, a CHP officer spotted not one, not two, but FIVE Corvettes zooming well above the speed limit on HWY 1 near Davenport,” said the department in a Facebook post.
The accompanying photo shows a few of the cars, a C7 with its top off and a pair of C8s. Based on the ticket issued to at least one of the drivers, the cars were allegedly going over 70 mph in a 55 mph zone when officers spotted them. One might think that posting what you’ll see below on Facebook would discourage additional speeding but it seems that isn’t the case.
Just a few days later, officers handed out no fewer than 34 tickets to two Porsche 911s that were stopped together on Highway 1. Much like during the Memorial Day enforcement period, the cars were caught driving well over the limit.
This time though, the cars happened to be ‘zooming’ through a construction zone. While we don’t know how much the fines were, we’re guessing they weren’t light. Be careful out there in Cali. It might be gorgeous but police aren’t looking at the scenery.
