The move could prove more costly and trialsome for New Jersey residents, but Tesla appears ready for anything.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carscoops.com\/2025\/05\/detroit-tesla-cybertruck-storage-parking-code-violation\/\">Tesla Dumping Unsold Cybertrucks At Mall Parking Lot And The City\u2019s Fed Up<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The automaker, rather than the state, actually announced the change on Friday. \u201cThe New Jersey Turnpike Authority (\u201cNJTA\u201d) has chosen a sole third-party charging provider to serve the New Jersey Turnpike and is not allowing us to co-locate. As a result, NJTA requested 64 existing Supercharger stalls on the New Jersey Turnpike to not be renewed and be decommissioned,\u201d it said in a statement on X.<\/p>\n<div id=\"taboola-mid-article\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"taboola-mid-article-thumbnails-organic\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>A Smaller Network With Higher Prices<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It went on to claim that it offered the state \u201cabove-market commercial terms\u201d and access for all EVs to keep the contract going. It would\u2019ve built more stations and upgraded existing ones with screens and CCS1 \u2018magic docks\u2019 as well. For whatever reason, the state said no and instead went with Applegreen for the foreseeable future. That\u2019s a fascinating decision since Applegreen\u2019s network is almost comically smaller than Tesla\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>At present, in the USA, it only serves a few states like New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. In New Jersey, it has only a few stations installed. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carscoops.com\/tag\/elon-musk\/\">Elon Musk<\/a> went as far as to posit that \u201ccorruption\u201d played a part in the decision. Applegreen, on the other hand, varies from $0.35 to $0.59<strong>,\u201d <\/strong>it found. <\/p>\n<p>If those figures hold, drivers could end up paying more to power their cars than they did before. It\u2019s possible the state stands to gain more financially under the new arrangement, though no public statements have been made by the NJTA to confirm or clarify that.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tesla Already Moving On<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All of that said, Tesla says it knew this was a potential outcome and has already supplemented the decommissioning of 64 charging bays with the creation of 116 stalls off of the turnpike. Interestingly, this might not be how the story ends. Otherwise, we will continue expanding the best charging infrastructure off the Turnpike to serve EV drivers in New Jersey,\u201d the automaker said. In a part of the world where charging infrastructure <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carscoops.com\/2024\/06\/harvard-study-says-1-in-5-public-ev-chargers-doesnt-work\/\">isn\u2019t exactly super-reliable<\/a>, this could be a step in the wrong direction.
