The Toyota Supra is going away for now, but what about the GR86? Its future seems far more secure even though the current model is entering middle age.

var adpushup = window.adpushup = window.adpushup || {que:[]}; Speaking to MotorTrend, Toyota Motor North America’s Senior Vice President of Product Planning and Strategy said “The GR86 serves a very important role as an affordable, fun sports car, a viral driving environment sensation, and that is something we want to keep in the Toyota and GR lineup.” Cooper Ericksen went on to say the car serves a “very important role for the company and GR, so it would be our intent to have a cool next generation.”

More: Toyota GR Future Lineup From Celica To Supercars And SUVs

While officials recently confirmed there will be a gap between the fifth- and six-generation Supra, it remains unclear if that will also happen with the GR86. However, Ericksen said they wouldn’t want the car to go on a hiatus as that would be “sub-optimum.”

Despite freely talking about the possibility of a third-generation GR86, Toyota officials clamed up when asked about the rumored MR-2 revival. However, Toyota’s David Christ said he’d love to have more GR models. As he explained, “With the GR brand we have proven that we can build and sell fun-to-drive, affordable exciting product and don’t have to go into the stratosphere on pricing to develop a fun car.”

With all that being said, sporty models don’t generate a lot of sales. Last year, Toyota sold 11,426 GR86s in the United States, which was a slight increase over the 11,078 sold in 2023. The GR86’s counterpart, the Subaru BRZ, did significantly worse as sales plummeted 20.1% last year to 3,345 units.

More: 2026 Toyota GR86 Yuzu Edition Debuts As A Scion Throwback
