Of course, that lowish price might have something to do with a different type of theft. This is one of the many cars former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carscoops.com\/tag\/police\/\">Sheriff<\/a> Jamey Noel bought with state funds. It\u2019s factory rated to make 390 horsepower (290 kW) and 490 lb-ft (663 Nm) of torque. It sends all of that power to the rear wheels via an automatic gearbox. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freijeauctioneers.com\/auctions\/863\/lot\/53497-1970-plymouth-super-bird-vin-rm23v0a162334\">This is essentially one<\/a> of the most sought-after packages from that time period. Ultimately, it appears that someone got a great deal on a very desirable car.<\/p>\n<p>By most measures, a car this rare and well-preserved should have commanded a higher price. Public sales data from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carscoops.com\/tag\/bring-a-trailer\/\">Bring A Trailer<\/a> shows that among the last nine Superbirds auctioned on the platform, only one sold for less than $200,000. <a href=\"https:\/\/bringatrailer.com\/listing\/1970-plymouth-superbird-41\/\">That example<\/a> went for $172,000 and had 82,000 miles, nearly twice the mileage of the Indiana car. <\/p>\n<p>All things considered, someone walked away with a solid deal on a car that\u2019s only getting more collectible.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever your thoughts on Noel\u2019s spending habits, this Superbird is still a standout piece of muscle car history. It\u2019s just that its road to the auction block was far from typical. Noel, for his part, is now required to repay over $3.1 million in public funds on top of serving his sentence.
