A fire has caused significant damage to around 50 vehicles at Jacksonville International Airport in Florida, after ripping through a large parking garage. The blaze forced the airport to close for hours, triggering a massive clean-up and repair effort that will likely stretch on for weeks. Meanwhile, countless motorists are now without their vehicles, and insurance companies are already bracing for a headache.

The inferno is believed to have started with a single car. There is no word on what type of vehicle is to blame, although that hasn’t stopped many from immediately pointing the finger at an EV after similar parking garage fires over the past couple of years.

Security footage from inside the parking facility reportedly shows the fire started on the second level before quickly spreading. It grew so intense that there was a partial collapse of the second and third floors, before another collapse occurred roughly 30 minutes later, Jacksonville reports.

The garage provides hourly parking facilities and is positioned directly across from the main airport terminal, offering access to 1,200 spaces. Photos shared to Facebook by the Jacksonville Fire Rescue Department show that many of the vehicles have been left as nothing but burnt-out shells, including numerous SUVs.

On Sunday, the Jacksonville Aviation Authority confirmed that the hourly garage remained closed.

“The Hourly Garage remains closed. Officials have established a collapse zone,” it said. “At this time only authorized personnel are able to access the garage. All other individuals are prohibited from entering this area to ensure their safety. Crews are working to establish safe areas of the garage where cars may be removed. We believe certain areas will be deemed safe and cleared later this week.”

There have been no reports of injuries, and the closure of the garage has forced travelers to park in other sites across the airport. A thorough investigation is underway to determine the cause of the inferno.
